THIS SUMMER

INT: THE OVAL OFFICE - MIDDAY
A man stands at a window behind the desk, clearly troubled yet still maintaining a proud bearing. He is unmistakably THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Two other men are in the room: one is seated at the coffee table; the other stands behind a couch with one hand resting on its back. The seated man speaks.
SECRETARY OF STATE
Ngani Mbasa was our man. We don't know what's going to happen with Dijembe Mkembe in charge. But one thing seems clear: he is not to be trusted.
The man behind the couch looks at the Secretary of State in disbelief. As the SECRETARY OF DEFENSE speaks, we cut to acts of brutality committed by Mkembe's men. Stabbings, shootings, screaming women and children. A city ablaze.
SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
(agitated)
Not to be trusted? He's a murderer! A butcher! Mkembe in charge puts thousands of innocent people in harm's way. Mr. President--
The Secretary of Defense removes his glasses and stares at the President with cold eyes.
SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
We must act.
The President draws a deep breath. He speaks, choosing his words deliberately.
THE PRESIDENT
Not one more innocent will have his blood shed. Not while I am the president of the greatest democracy the world has ever known.
(beat)
We are through the looking glass.
The President looks at the Secretary of Defense.
THE PRESIDENT
Take him out.
The Secretary of Defense adopts a knowing gaze, a sly smile finding its way to the corners of his mouth.
SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
I have the man for the job.
EXT: THE SUBURBS - DAWN
There are rows of two-story townhouses with white picket fences. A woman with a large black Labrador is jogging down the sidewalk. She waves to a MAN IN A BATHROBE, who returns the greeting with a sheepish grin. He is standing on the front step of one of the houses.
NARRATOR
Marcus Bishop is a family man.
Two young children, a BOY and a GIRL, rush through the open front door of the house to grab BISHOP's legs. The boy tugs at the man's sleeve.
BOY
Daddy, can we have Pop-Tarts for breakfast?
BISHOP
(chuckling)
I guess some sugar couldn't hurt. But make sure your mother doesn't find out, O.K.?
A WOMAN appears at his side as the children go back inside. She kisses him on the cheek.
WOMAN
(chiding)
You know giving them sugar's a bad idea.
BISHOP
How about some sugar for daddy?
NARRATOR
But he's about to learn...
INT: OFFICE BUILDING, LOBBY
Every surface is marble, polished to a mirror sheen. BISHOP is in a suit, striding toward a bank of elevators. He holds a briefcase in his left hand and a folded newspaper in the other. He reaches one of the elevators, sets down his briefcase, and opens the newspaper. His brow furrows in puzzlement.
NARRATOR
...that you can't...
The headline of the newspaper reads: COUP IN LUWANDA. MBASA EXILED.
NARRATOR
...outrun the past.
EXT: MANHATTAN
Bishop is walking down a densely-populated sidewalk in Manhattan. He weaves between passerby while speaking into a mobile phone.
BISHOP
(exasperated)
No. I won't do it. I have a life. A wife, kids...I can't leave them.
MAN ON PHONE
(V.O.)
Your country needs you, Marcus.
Bishop reaches an intersection. A black unmarked Cadillac with tinted windows pulls into the crosswalk. The rear passenger door opens. Bishop sighs and enters the vehicle, closing the door behind him.
NARRATOR
THIS SUMMER...
INT: CARGO PLANE - NIGHT
Bishop is wearing a flightsuit decked out in a digital forest camoflague pattern. He is smoking a cigar, seated. A MAN IN A FLIGHT SUIT is standing in front of him.
MAN IN FLIGHT SUIT
Look. You know the drill.
BISHOP
Yeah.
MAN IN FLIGHT SUIT
Kill Mkembe and get to the border. You have no allied support. If you're captured--
BISHOP
Here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to kill Mkembe, and anybody who gets in my way--
Bishop flicks the cigar to the floor and stamps it out.
BISHOP
--is gonna wish they didn't.
NARRATOR
One man...
EXT: JUNGLE - NIGHT
A lone guard wearing a beret is scanning the jungle. BISHOP rises silently behind him and slits his throat.
NARRATOR
...will put everything on the line...
EXT: MILITARY ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT
Bishop, now shirtless, is running over vines and roots, wielding an AK-74, and dropping fatigued soldiers left and right. A fuel truck explodes, toppling a watchtower.
NARRATOR
...for freedom.
EXT: CITY - MIDDAY
The buildings are hardened mud bricks. Bishop is leading a pack of Africans in tattered clothes; the are wielding pitchforks and machetes, as well as small arms. Soldiers on the rooftops are firing on the mob...the whole thing has the character of a running battle. A stray RPG hits a corner: a massive explosion.
MKEMBE
(V.O.)
Who is this man?
MAN
(V.O.)
We don't know.
MKEMBE
(V.O.)
Is he American? A mercenary?
INT: PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE - MIDDAY
The office of the President of Luwanda. The trappings are fantastically extravagant. A MAN in a business suit stands, with the air of a penitent.
MAN
We don't know.
MKEMBE is a hulking, dark man. He stands behind a huge desk and wears the uniform of a general. He sends one arm across the desk, and heavy wooden and ivory carvings crash into the wall. The other man flinches.
MKEMBE
(enraged)
Then why is he destroying my country? Kill his wife! Kill his children!
Mkembe slams his fists against the desk. Splinters fly through the air.
MKEMBE
Kill him!
NARRATOR
Jason Statham.
INT: PRESIDENTIAL PALACE - MIDDAY
There are at least a dozen uniformed guards on patrol. AN EXPLOSION blasts through half of them: the other half are gunned down by BISHOP.

EXT: ELEVATED HIGHWAY - DAWN
Bishop is on a large motorcyle, chasing a convoy of vehicles. He pulls out an RPG launcher with one arm and fires it: a truck with a mounted machine gun flips into the air after a large explosion. Men on the back of the lead vehicle--a flatbed truck with a military fortification on the back--duck and shield their faces.
NARRATOR
Delroy Lindo.
Mkembe rises from the back of the truck, a crazed look on his face. He is wielding a minigun; he SCREAMS and begins to fire at Bishop.

INT: LARGE CAFETERIA
Bishop is standing on a table, shouting at a huge crowd of disheveled workers.
BISHOP
Are you going to let Mkembe take your parents, your sons, your daughters?
EXT: ROOFTOPS - MIDDAY
Bishop is leaping from one to the next, shooting soldiers with MAC-10s akimbo, and when their ammo is exhausted, throwing large hunting knives. He catches a knife thrown at him and flings it back at the attacker, decapitating him.

INT: CAFETERIA
The workers are beginning to nod along with Bishop's words.
BISHOP
(louder)
When are you going to stand up for what's right?
INT: HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
Bishop holds his head in his hands. He throws a bottle against the wall; it shatters.

INT: CAFETERIA - MIDDAY
BISHOP
(shouting)
Fight! Fight with me!
The workers cheer. Bishop throws both arms above his head.

EXT: ELEVATED HIGHWAY
Bishop is standing on the handlebars of his motorcycle. He is brandishing two SPAS-12s. He bends his legs for a split second and then springs into the air. In slow motion, we see Bishop in midair flying toward the flatbed, bringing the weapons to bear in front of him, as Mkembe begins to swing a huge axe toward Bishop.
